Jonathan Simkhai S/S 2018: Wild Texture, Airy Curls
Freeflowing, over-the-top tight ringlets provided the foil for the designer’s latest collection, which centered on cozy neutrals with a sophisticated twist, such as corseted crochet and voluminous chambray. Last season’s stripes and tailored ruffles extended into the new season with a less buttoned-up approach—think uptown gal vacationing at the prairie—all with her second-day curls tossed up into the wind, in a charming half-up, half-down hairstyle. We spoke to TRESemmé NYFW Stylist Odile Gilbert to learn more about this delightfully wild texture, or what they caledl “I-will-not-be-ready-in-5-minutes hair,” and best part, all without having to displace ourselves in the dustbowl to achieve that telltale weekend flush. “Using your fingertips to rake your hair will create more natural and wild texture,” the stylist suggests. Hi Odile! Can you take us through today’s look?
Odile Gilbert: “The look for the show is going to be very curly hair, like tiny little curls. From there, we wrap the hair towards the side, twist it, do a knot, and leave the rest of the hair down. And here [at the front] we kind of have an explosion!”
So, obviously, not “natural” at all?
“It looks natural, but it’s not.”
What was the inspiration for the look?
“Just… something that does not exist! (laughs). We’re using TRESemmé Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo, then TRES Two Extra Hold Hair Spray to hold the curls. Then we just like [makes fluffing movement]… it’s like cooking!”
Wow, now that sounds like fun! And how can the everyday gal recreate all this wild texture on her own?
“I think she needs to go to a hairstylist (laughs). But it could be fun! Because there was a time that people did body waves because it was the fashion [at the time]. But like sometimes if you want a change and have it look really curly, I think it’s worth it to go to a hairstylist and do this for fun.”
Ed’s note:
Step 1: To mimic the look at Jonathan Simkhai, first cleanse your hair with TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Shampoo and Conditioner or refresh second-day hair with TRESemmé Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo. Step 2: Next, use TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Defense Spray to prime hair while rough-drying, then proceed to tightly wind hair around a thin (3/8”) curling iron barrel to create those tight, prairie-gal ringlets.
Step 3: Break curls apart with fingers, then create two strips on the top half of hair and twist them across each other, pinning in the center. Step 4: Finish by wrapping the ends of hair from the knot and pinning them around the head like a crown, and securing with a hairspray, like TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray. Pull some tendrils free to soften the look. Check out more straight-off-the-runway hair trends in our NYFW series.
